The Tightrope Walker

I can’t tell you how many people come to me and believe they have all of their affairs in order because they have a will. Don’t get me wrong- having a will is important! But I like to describe it as having a safety net under a tightrope that you’re walking across.

If the beginning of the tightrope is you being here- capable and able to make decisions for yourself- and the end of the tight-rope is you passing on and someone else taking on that role, in a well settled estate plan, you will hopefully never need to use that will! Just like a tightrope walker hopes to never fall into the net- the goal is to make it to the other side without ever touching the net!

A lot of people think that the big benefit of a will is to distribute things to the people you want to have them. That is true, but did you realize you can accomplish that during your life, maintaining possession until after you’re gone, but doing it in such a way that your loved ones will not have to sort through the complexities of probate? It’s not the end of the world if they do, but why not invest a small amount of time to make it simpler for them? The cost of the investment is likely less than the fees that you will pay going through probate.

At the Shore Lawyer, we sell much more than a piece of paper that will tell someone who remains after you what to do with your stuff. We sell customized plans to take the assets that YOU have, and the unique circumstances of the people you want to receive them- and make sure that they are distributed in the simplest, most protected, most cost-effective way. If your kids or loved ones are well settled, we can work with that. If you have a loved one you want to provide for, but you are concerned about their financial situation, a potential failed marriage in their future, or a substance abuse problem, we have unique ways to protect your assets for their benefit while also protecting them from creditors or poor decisions!  The possibilities are endless, and we are always studying ways to better preserve your legacy to make it the most valuable thing you can leave behind to the people you care most about.

If you just want to figure out your options and you aren’t ready to commit to a full estate plan, we can do peace of mind consults that don’t involve any further packages but give you personalized advice based on your unique needs and desires.
